Clear synthetic...no big deal, right? Except, unlike Remo and many other sombati size heads, these actually tune up EVENLY. I get a totally consistent sound all the way around the rim. That to me is enough to give this an excellent rating as my persuit for perfection has left me with much frustration. Yes I prefer the warm doum and chiming taks of a Skyndeep, but they rarely tune evenly - always those 2 adjacent locations on the collar that are pitched higher or lower than the rest. Get out your iron to get this flush with the collar of your Ramzy "Tabla" (mine is actually sombati size). Otherwise it will be too tight and choke the resonance out. But, with a screwdriver to barely squeeze it over the rim and a little heat to stretch it out, the sound is superb and more importantly to me...its balanced!
