The idea behind EGYPTIAN RAÏ is to use different types of sounds, rhythms, songs and feel, all from the Arab world.

It is my wish that anyone who listens to this album may get an eagle’s eye view over the Arab world. Looking down on it from great heights, one realizes that it is a world in its own right. It is at its best when it communicates with its own peoples as well as with other members of our Earth.” – Hossam Ramzy.

Description

Egyptian Rai

EUCD 2025

The music spans a wide arc across the Arab world from Lebanon,
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to Morocco, bringing familiar styles from the
various Arabic nations together into a pan-Arabic synthesis, along with
rock and funk bass and jazzy lines from sax, trumpet and the quarter
tone accordion.

“… an album of infectious intensity” – J. Woodard, Jazz Times

“… loud, fast, hard-hitting and trippy” – Rolling Stone

This World Music album puts together the best of dance music,
using music from as far a field as Morocco and Lebanon, Egypt and
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia etc.

“In this album a dream has come true, the uniting of the Arab
world. The word RAÏ means “opinion”. It is a form of music that
expresses the feelings of the youth, especially when society forbids
voicing such emotions in “normal” day to day life.

RAÏ came out of Algeria, but nevertheless the concept holds true
throughout the Middle East. The idea behind EGYPTIAN RAÏ is to use
different types of sounds, rhythms, songs and feel, all from the Arab
world.

It is my wish that anyone who listens to this album may get an
eagle’s eye view over the Arab world. Looking down on it from great
heights, one realizes that it is a world in its own right. It is at its
best when it communicates with its own peoples as well as with other
members of our Earth.”

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

I am a new comer to the Raï music and actually found out about this disc by pure chance, but I have to say that the music inside is PURE MAGIC. It really is.

There is a kind of magnetism in most of the songs included, but in my opinion it reaches almost perfection with the song "El Ataba Gazaz". There it seems as if all the instruments are speaking to each other creating a kind of party atmosphere that makes you enjoy even more whatever you are doing. I am not able to stay quite while listening to this music.

All the other songs are masterfully played and most of them make me feel better. This is what music should be for.

If I must make a negative remark, I would say that the last song in the disc ("The star collector") breaks the mood of the rest. It is not a bad song per se, but in my opinion it does not fit with all the other sound explosion.

So, summarizing I am recommending everyone to listen to this music and this disc in particular. Now, if you are not a good dancer, like me, listen to it privately because your feet are going to start disobeying your orders.
