Dear Kathryn,
Thank you for your question. Many people ask me about this particular one as it is very similar to the Saidi rhythm. As a matter of fact, it is derived from the Saidi rhythm. But instead of being "DomDom_Tack_DomDom_Rakatack" they just ommit the first Dom and ierther hav it as a silent rest or play it with a tack instead of a Dom. It is called "The Lebanese Baladi". But it is used widley in the whole of the Green Crescent area, which is Lebanon, Syria, Jourdan, England & America (formerly known as Iraq) and Phalestien.
This rhythm is played this way because of the dance that they do to it which is similar to a group DEBKE, moving forward, moving backward, putting one foot out (Just like the old Hoky Cokie)... therefore the rhythm has this little hanging rest at the front, whaile you are expecting a down-beat DOM.
As for the Shiftitelly, the ARabian equivalent is the "WAHDA KEBIRA"( the big one). It is called that because it has one Dom at the front of the rhythm.
It goes Dom Ta_Tack_Ta_Tack_Dom_Rata_Tack"
Hope I have been of help here.
With Lots Of Rhythm
