Thanks Hossam,
I'd never actually heard of the cane dance being described as having two different "origins" so that was very interesting. I knew about the saidi style having evolved from the men's martial arts but didn't realise the baladi style came from using walking sticks. I have seen cane dances done to baladi music and was a bit confused as to whether that was "artistic licence" or whether there was some historical basis for the use of baladi music with the cane. (I have your double CD and it's probably my most often played out of all of yours)
Maria is still running around doing too much, she still hasn't learnt to say "no", and she still loves her dancing! I'll say hello and get her to write! Her big news is she's going on a trip to Egypt and Turkey soon. I think she's going in Oct.

: Dear Lorelle,
: You are right, my memory is like a sive these days, but I do remember a lady doing a Cane dance in Brisbaine.
: Thank you for such a great question, but my deepest thanks go to you for wanting your students to learn the right thing and be well and correctly informed.
: The cane dance is devided into two sections :
: 1. The Saidi styles, from Upper Egypt. Normally done by men. it is a Martial Art of its own right and believe me, don't mess around with Saidis who are fighting with a Shouma (Base Ball size cane) or Nabboot the full length one. However, ladies do-do a cane dance using a much thinner and lighter one. The kind of music that would be used for this dance is Saidi Music of course. To give you a good example, almost all the music on the Saidi section of my CD "The Best Of Baladi and Saidi" EUCD 1389. (There is a song there called.... "Raqset El Assaya"..... Tarrrrraaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnn
: 2. The second version is done by the Baladi people, using a walking cane. When the ladies dance it is is very coy, playful as well as a demonstration of strength, independance and immitating the men in a cinical way.
: The music for that is also available on the same double CD mentioned above. One CD of Baladi Music and the other is Saidi Music.
: I hope this is of help. Please always feel free to ask me about this kind of thing.
: And finally, please give my regards to Maria Massellos and ask her to write to me sometime. I have not had any news from her for ages.
: With Lots of Rhythm
